‘Long Green Corridor’ Ensures Smooth Transportation along Lanzhou–Xinjiang Railway

During the spring time, when taking the train through the area between Yanquan and Hami along Lanzhou – Xinjiang Railway, you can enjoy the view of different kinds of trees including rose willow, diversifolious poplar and desert date trees at both sides of the line. With the effort of the staff of China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd. over the 20 years, a long green corridor with the width of 40m and accumulative length of about 1,000km were built in the sections from Yanquan to Alashankou along Lanzhou – Xinjiang Railway and from Yunya to Kuerle along South Xinjiang Railway.

In 2000, the “Long Green Corridor” Project of China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd. was incorporated in the construction of key forestry ecology project in Xinjiang. According to the principle of “from easiness to hardness, step by step”, China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd. adopted a combined method and improved the technological content in afforestation to build the ‘Long Green Corridor’, making it function in terms of windbreak, sand stabilization and flood control for the railway transportation.

Most parts of Xinjiang are located in drought regions. If the trees are not irrigated in time, they will die due to lack of water. China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd. adopted drip irrigation technology for the windbreak and sand stabilization forest system, conveying water to the trees through the drip irrigation pipelines. Besides, the staff of the company also tied the plastic sheets with different colors to each tree at the positions of roots and stems, by means of which biological rodent control was achieved, and a large number of birds were attracted to live in the “Long Green Corridor”.

As some sections of Lanzhou–Xinjiang Railway were close to the villages, potential safety risks existed in terms of fire control for the windbreak and sand stabilization forest system. China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd. conducted regular interview and publicity among the residents living near the forest zone, and organized the staff to weed the dead grasses during the autumn. Over the past 20 years, there has been no fire accident in the windbreak and sand stabilization forest.
